Begun as a purely abstract piece, the "subject" slowly started to reveal itself. As I painted, I could see and feel the red volcanic forms of Navajoland. I could hear the flutes playing in my head. The hot dry air and the quiet pace of the Native American peoples presented themselves once again to my senses. In my memory, I began hearing some of the conversations I had taken part in and heard amongst the Indians of the Southwest. This was truly a reflective time while I was painting this piece. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed painting it.
